WHAT IS A SKATE NIGHT?
A skate night is an organised tour where large groups of inline skaters – and sometimes roller skaters – skate through a city together. Depending on the location, these events may also be known as a BladeNight, Rollnacht, night skate or Skate by Night. They usually take place in the evening during the warmer months and follow roads that are temporarily closed to traffic or secured by police and event marshals.
What makes a skate night so special is its combination of sport, community and a unique sightseeing experience. While inline skaters normally have to rely on cycle paths and quieter side streets, a skate night takes the group along wide main roads, past famous landmarks and sometimes even through tunnels or across multi-lane junctions. Music, illuminated skates and the long procession of participants create a truly memorable atmosphere.
The routes vary depending on the city and event. Some locations offer shorter, family-friendly tours, while others feature more challenging routes covering 20, 30 or even more kilometres. To participate, you should be able to skate confidently in a straight line, brake safely and keep up with the group. Before attending, always check the route length, difficulty level, participation requirements and whether protective equipment is mandatory.
Popular Skate Nights in Germany
Many German cities regularly organise guided tours for inline skaters. Dates, routes and starting points may change from one season to the next, and events can be cancelled due to bad weather. You should therefore always check the latest information provided by the organiser before travelling.
- BladeNight Munich: From May to September, skaters take to the streets of Munich on Monday evenings, following a variety of routes. In addition to the regular tours, family-friendly routes are also offered.
- Rollnacht Düsseldorf: One of Germany’s best-known skate nights. Starting in Düsseldorf’s Old Town, the changing routes follow closed roads through the state capital.
- Skatenight Münster: These regular tours start at Schlossplatz or Hafenplatz and follow a variety of routes through Münster. Music and a volunteer safety crew accompany the event.
- Dresden Night Skate: Held since 1998, the Dresden Night Skate is considered the first event of its kind in Germany. In addition to the regular tours, special night skates for children are also organised.
- Tuesday Night Skating Frankfurt: During the season, skaters meet every Tuesday evening in Frankfurt. The changing and often longer routes start at Hafenpark and explore different parts of the city.
- Skate by Night Hannover: Hannover offers a variety of routes through the city and surrounding areas. The programme also includes shorter family tours and special themed events.
- Bremen Skate Night: The Bremen event follows longer, secured routes through different parts of the city. The starting point and exact route may vary depending on the tour.
- Skate Nights in Mannheim and Ludwigshafen: The Rhein-Neckar Skaters organise various tours in Mannheim, Ludwigshafen and the surrounding region, with different starting points and routes.
- Chemnitz Night Skate: From May to September, organised tours regularly follow changing routes through Chemnitz.
- Fulda Skate Night: Guided tours through Fulda and the surrounding area take place during the summer season. Safe braking skills and highly visible clothing are expressly recommended.
- Skatenight Bielefeld: Bielefeld also invites skaters to take to the streets together. Details about dates, meeting points, routes and the event schedule can be found on our event page.
- Bernburg Skate Night: This long-established tour lasts around two hours and is accompanied by a music vehicle.
Whether you join a large BladeNight or a smaller regional tour, considerate and controlled skating is particularly important within a group. Keep a safe distance, avoid sudden changes of direction and follow the instructions of the event marshals. This helps make the tour a safe and memorable experience for everyone.
